The classical and folk dances of India offer a rich tapestry of movement expressions, storytelling, and acrobatic skill. Every facet of the body is utilized and expressed through the dance and offers a glimpse into the power and beauty of the human body’s ability to express the realities of our ordinary lives as well as that of Infinite Consciousness. This masterclass will introduce students to the the technique and nuances unique to Indian dance and how we layer it on to belly dance movements to create a beautiful blend of the two. We will also touch on the history, mythology, and devotional elements that influence and support our dance.

Master Class Includes:
*Classical and Folk inspired warm up
*Introduction to “Lasya” & “Tandava”: foundational movement principles of Classical Indian dance that embody the energies of the Divine Feminine and Masculine.
*Introduction to the nuances of Indian dance, e.g. eyes (dristi) and neck movements (grebe), mudras, expressions, and story telling.
* Introduction to core belly dance technique
* Indian dance drills based on the movements of Odissi, Kathak, and Rajasthani folk.
* A fun Indian Fusion belly dance choreography to tie it all together!
BIO:
Kalidasi is a multifaceted dancer from Boston, MA. who specializes in elegantly and ethically fusing classical Indian and belly dance. In her professional work, she has developed a dance style called “Anandamayi Belly Dance” or “Bliss-Permeated” Belly Dance that brings the ancient Vedic principles of sacred dance into the movements of belly dance. Her dance and instruction is informed by her fifteen years of study in tribal fusion bellydance, Shakespearean theatre, Horton technique of Modern dance, and the classical Indian dances Odissi, Bharatnatyam, and Kathak; She studied Bharatnatyam with Deepa Srinath in Boston, and currently studies within the Mohapatra lineage of Odissi under her master teachers Colleena Shakti and Sudhansu Puhan in Pushkar, Rajasthan and locally with Mouli Pal. In 2012 she had the honor of performing Odissi at the Pushkar Temple Dance Festival, in Pushkar India, produced annually by the Shakti School of Dance and the Old Rang Nath temple. Kalidasi was also a principal member of Boston-based Vadalna Tribal Dance Company, directed by Naraya Ligouri from 2009-2015. She has trained extensively with internationally renowned teachers Rachel Brice, Zoe Jakes, Ashley Lopez, Colleena Shakti, Mardi Love, Miriam Peretz, and Amar Gamal. Kalidasi continues to teach workshops and perform internationally and is passionate about teaching the healing powers of this beautiful art form.
