SUMMARY:Workshop: Experiential Anatomy
DESCRIPTION:Experiential Anatomy \nA Co. AV workshop led by Vincent Cacialano \n$35 \nIn this workshop you will work with individuals who studied with founding artists from the history of Dance and Somatic Education. Practitioners who have achieved accreditation and international recognition in both the practical and theoretical contexts of Somatic Dance and Performance. \nThis workshop will approach moving from the inside out\, where each individual can connect to their own movement sources\, vocabulary\, facility\, and inspiration while learning crucial information about the body and movement – information that supports dance technique and all other aspects of movement. We will first tune our bodies with a floor-barre\, connecting into our center and out to the periphery. We will do this through the Feldenkrais Method\, a form of somatic education that utilises gentle movement and directed attention to improve and enhance human functioning.\nWe will then transition into physical exploration exercises\, including contact work and touch\, based in\, but expanding the work done in the Feldenkrais floor-barre. This will allow participants to explore concepts within a large range of physicality. In this part of the workshop we will use exercises that enhance ones awareness of space and movement with others. The entire workshop will incorporate exercises that work to release tension\, improve posture and movement\, and facilitate a deep sense of body awareness and inner and outer connectivity. \nAll bodies\, ages and levels of experience are welcome. No dance training necessary.

SUMMARY:Luigi Jazz Series begins
DESCRIPTION:May 8th – June 26th\nTuesdays 5-6pm\nwith Tess Wonson\n  \nThis one hour introductory Luigi class is warm-up focused and technique based with a thorough breakdown of each exercise. All levels welcome\, great for beginners. \nEugene Facciuto\, known as Luigi\, created the first comprehensive Jazz dance warm up and exercise routine when recovering from a devastating car crash 1946 that left him with paralysis on his left side. He rebuilt his body from the inside out while creating the routine\, going on to be cast in the 1949 film with Gene Kelley On The Town and numerous shows and films thereafter. \nTess Wonson worked as an assistant in exchange for daily classes at the Luigi studio in NYC from 2004-2006. Luigi was seventy-‐eight at the time and still taught two classes six days a week with his incredibly talented and dedicated partner Francis Roach\, who continues running Luigi’s Jazz Dance Centre in NY.  While it did not translate into a career in dance\, it gave her a solid foundation in the technique and she is very excited to be joining the team at MAGMA here in Gloucester.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Contact Improvisation with Felice Wolfzahn
DESCRIPTION:Taught by Felice Wolzahn \n$65 early registration (before April 15)\n$75 regular price \nCome for the afternoon to explore an introduction to this invigorating\, spirited\, and rich dance. Contact Improvisation is primarily a duet movement form; a resonating exploration of how moving in balance with ourselves allows us to move in greater harmony with others. Two people move together playing in a physical dialogue\, communicating through the language of touch\, momentum\, and physical listening. We will explore some of the basic skills and concepts including: weight sharing\, rolling\, counterbalancing\, gentle movement patterns\, and tuning our senses to touch. In turn\, we cultivate a relaxed\, fluid body and a responsive\, attentive mind. Skill work will be interspersed with guided improvisations\, taking time to share observations of this spirited and playful movement form. All levels of experience are welcome! \nBio:\nFelice Wolfzahn is a veteran teacher of Contact Improvisation\, teaching in colleges and dance centers for over 25 years. She holds a BFA from the Juilliard School and a Masters degree from Bennington College. She has been teaching in the Five College dance department of MA for the past twenty-three years and has taught in many colleges and dance programs including The School for New Dance Development in Holland\, American Dance Festival\, NC\, and Earthdance in Western MA. Felice’s work combines investigations into Authentic Movement and Contemporary dance techniques as well. She has collaborated with other artists including Nancy Stark Smith\, Catherine Sands and Daniel Lepkoff. Felice is interested in how dance can be instructional as well as nurturing; fostering self-awareness\, and incorporating the whole self into its investigations.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Introduction To Tai-Chi Long Form
DESCRIPTION:Introduction To Tai-Chi Long Form\nwith Kampa VaShi Deva\nSaturday March 10\, 2018 @ MAGMA\nAll Levels Welcome! No Experience Needed \nRESERVE A SPOT \nThe Classical Yang Family Long Form is a traditional Tai-Chi Chuan form passed down to family members and disciples by the Great-Great Grand Master Yang Cheng-Fu (1883-1936) who is famously known as the father of the 108 Form. \nThe descriptive meaning of Tai-Chi is “superior-ultimate”. In other literal versions it is known as a “moving meditation” or “moving like a great river”. The word Chuan means fist”. In Chinese texts Chuan also means boxing”. Together Tai-Chi Chuan means Superior-Ultimate Shadow Boxing. This practice is a martial art with slow\, relaxed\, and flowing movements. It is ideal for those seeking gentle rehabilitative exercises for reducing tension and stress of the body. In today’s modern medicine doctors refer Tai-Chi to their clients for supporting balance and controlling anxiety. Devoted students are known to study Tai-Chi Chuan for “innate power” of your “true nature” through calmness. It is a low impact exercise that emphasizes on balance\, grace\, and fluidity through motion. \nAs you learn the late Yang Cheng Fu’s form you will focus on physical body alignments (body structure) and methods of moving (body mechanics) to prevent and heal various injuries as well as making both body and mind stronger more relaxed and focused. The internal frame is largely emphasized with expanded movements specialized in what we refer to as Qi\, Energy in the body. (See schedule below) \nThis class is lead by Kampa VaShi Deva (Sifu Nicanor Snow) founder of the Seacoast Tai-Chi Institute

SUMMARY:M'Bolo
DESCRIPTION:M’bolo\, meaning “togetherness” in the Senegalese language Wolof\, embraces this ethos in the creation of their high-octane hybrid of Mbalax and Rock. \nLead singer/percussionist Cheikh Ngom began singing\, dancing\, and playing sabar drums at the age of four in the coastal city of Kaolack\, Senegal. After performing throughout Africa and Europe\, Ngom arrived in the United States\, where he founded M’bolo with Dillon Zahner (guitar)\, Galen Willett (bass)\, Arone N’diaye (keys)\, and Beza Gebre (drumset). Guitar\, bass\, keys\, and drums combine to form a rhythmically intricate lattice of propulsive licks\, snaking leads\, and hypnotizing grooves\, punctuated by the rapid-fire attack of the sabar drums. \nLive shows are highlighted by the explosive energy of Ngom’s dance moves\, fusing his Kaolack roots with a Michael Jackson flair. Their debut album\, entitled M’bolo\, captures the fiery spirit of their live shows as well as the incantations of their more introspective and meditative chansons. \nDoors open at 8pm. B.Y.O.B. \nHear them at www.mbolomusic.com
