SUMMARY:Trauma Sensitive Yoga Foundational Training
DESCRIPTION:Trauma Sensitive Yoga Foundational Training \n  \nThis 20-hour Online training (15 hrs live content\, 5 hrs self-study) is based on research from the Trauma Center of the Justice Resource Institute. It is specifically designed for social workers\, mental health clinicians\, yoga teachers\, educators\, and health care professionals who are looking to deepen their understanding of the whole-system impact of complex Trauma. The course will emphasize the core components of the practice and process of Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) and will provide specific tools to support participants to facilitate trauma sensitive movement and breath practices that are vital to the healing process. This workshop utilizes an anti-oppressive lens through which we will develop an understanding of complex trauma\, attachment theory\, and neuroscience. This workshop also emphasizes the methodology of TCTSY so that participants will leave with tangible tools they can immediately apply within their professional scope of practice.  \n  \nSchedule: \nFriday November 13: 4-7pm \nSaturday November 14: 9:30 – 12:30 and 2pm – 5pm \nSunday November 15: 9:30 – 12:30 and 2pm – 5pm \n  \nInvestment: \nWe are offering a self-determined way to invest in this training. The scale is based on your self-determined access to resources\, privilege and social capital. As you reflect on which fee is right for you\, you are encouraged to consider aspects of your identity that do\, or do not\, grant you privilege/access to social capital e.g. race\, gender & sexual identity\, socio-economic status\, educational background\, able-bodied-ness\, etc. Tickets range between $300 and $400.  *Please note due to ticket price ranges\, you will only be able to access these through the Mindbody web browser\, and not the Mindbody App. \n\nLimited spots remaining\n\nREGISTER HERE \n  \nPlease note that this training does not certify participants to become yoga instructors\, but rather offers tools and techniques that each participant can incorporate within their own professional scope of practice. Additionally\, though many of us may have personal experiences of trauma\, this training is not an intervention for individual healing. Talking and learning about trauma\, even in the context of a training\, can be activating. \nFor questions\, please contact Anna: anna@wholehumancounseling.com or 617.444.9553 \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Souvenir: Foreign Expressions of Japan\nan evening of art and performance featuring work by: \nCasey Buckles (film) \nSara June and Max Lord (butoh/sound) \nMidori Gleason (visual art) \nWilliam Gleason (Aikido demo) \nCarrie J. Preston (Modern Noh) \n$15 at the door or online \nBios: \nLord and June: Max Lord and Sara June have been making performances together since 2006. As Lord and June\, they have presented improvisational duets\, site-sensitive durational performance works\, and historically informed visual-sound installations\, often in unique locations. Recent works include Peacock\,  a commission by the Boston University Art Galleries for performance alongside the internationally acclaimed Hiroshima Panels by Japanese artists Iri and Toshi Maruki\, and Heron\, a movement sound work created to interact with Japanese Artist Fujiko Nakaya’s large-scale fog sculptures installed as part of her FOG x Flo exhibition in Boston’s Emerald Necklace. http://www.lordandjune.com/ \nWilliam Gleason is the American author of two books about aikido\, spirituality and kototama. He holds the rank of 7th dan in aikido and is the founder and head instructor of Shobu Aikido in Somerville\, MA. Gleason teaches seminars worldwide.  http://www.shobu.org/ \nCarrie J. Preston is a writer\, performer\, and the Arvind and Chandon Nandlal Kilachand Professor of English and Gender Studies and Director of Kilachand Honors College at Boston University. Her works include the noh-inspired play Zahdi Dates and Poppies (world-premiere 2016) and Learning to Kneel: Noh\, Modernism\, and Journeys in Teaching (2016).\n\nCasey Emmet Buckles:  Having started with writing in the later years at GHS\, I moved onto digital filming in the past year.  My concepts are born in colors  which made writing a long process filled with self doubt.  The time and flow of visual/audio presentation has freed what had been restrained by constant writing re-edits.  The presence of mind and its awareness in environment is what I want to share with those who view my work.

SUMMARY:Cuban Salsa Workshop Begins
DESCRIPTION:Cuban Salsa\n6-week series \nLearn Cuban Salsa with Sandy Perez \nAll levels welcome\, no experience or partner necessary. \n$75 for all 6 lessons\, $15 single class \nREGISTER ONLINE \n  \nBIO: Sandy Perez was born in Matanzas\, Cuba in el barrio de la marina\, the marina neighborhood.  As the poorest location in Matanzas\, la marina overflows with cultural and spiritual riches.   Sandy is a descendant of the Villamil family and was raised amongst them playing sacred drums for the African deities and spirits in familial ceremonies.  His gift was quickly recognized by family\, community and spirits alike and at the age of 16 gained his artistic position with Grupo Afrocuba de Matanzas\, a cultural institution representing the varied and rich genres of afro-cuban folklore worldwide. \nSandy’s first international gig was with Cuban modern artist Manuel Mendive in 1996\, travelling to Brazil with Cuban akpon (ceremonial lead singer) Lazaro Ros. There they melded art\, culture\, spirituality and music\, joining the diasporic nations of Brazil and Cuba and discovering near lost connections. Before leaving Cuba\, he toured Europe with Afrocuba\, and later with experimental jazz musician Steve Coleman. \nIn 1999 he emigrated to the US and began teaching from coast to coast. He has played and recorded with countless musicians through many genres including Yosvany Terry\, Steve Coleman\, Miguel Anga\, Daphnis Prieto\, Olodum\, los Munequitos de Matanzas\, Pedrito Martinez- the list goes on and on. \nIn more recent years he has performed and presented at many Universities and museums including Harvard University\, Humboldt State University\, CSU Davis\, Berklee College of Music\, Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, Peabody Essex Museum and the Rubin Museum of Art to name a few. \nSandy is a living lexicon of the language of the drum. His hands tell the sacred stories of his profound ancestry. His existence preserves these deep roots as he forges meaningful artistic connections crossing all boundaries of race\, nationality and language.

SUMMARY:Electric Root
DESCRIPTION:Electric Root \nFeaturing musicians Sandy Perez\, Neil Leonard\, and Vanessa Lindberg \nElectric Root performs a multimedia work for saxophone/electronics\, folkloric ensemble and video. It Is an exploration of ancient past and distant future\, combining the depth of afro-cuban folklore and expansive saxophone melodies within the matrix of electronic vibration. The piece addresses the devastating impact of global warming on the culture in Matanzas\, Cuba. \n  \nMAGMA\, 11 Pleasant Street\nFriday January 31\, 8pm \n$15 in advance\, $20 at the door \nBIOS: \nSandy Perez was born in Matanzas\, Cuba in el barrio de la marina\, the marina neighborhood. \nNeil Leonard is a sound artist\, saxophonist and composer. He often performs his compositions for saxophone and electronics with top musicians and folkloric ensembles. Recent sound installations explore how global marketing impacts our listening\, and were made in collaboration with bartenders\, biologists\, street criers and dock workers. For years\, he has created projects engaging musicians living in both the United States and Cuba\, where art is both a final result\, and means to circumvent prohibition. \nHis compositions were featured by documenta 14 (Germany)\, Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery (USA) and in New York at Carnegie Hall\, Whitney Museum of American Art\, Guggenheim Museum\, Roulette\, Experimental Intermedia Foundation\, Issue Project Room\, Knitting Factory. Leonard’s ensemble featured Joanne Brackeen\, Terence Blanchard and Robin Eubanks. Leonard performed and recorded with Richard Devine\, Vijay Iyer\, Phill Niblock\, Rudresh Mahanthappa\, Los Muñequitos de Matanzas\, Robin Rimbaud aka Scanner\, Stephen Vitiello\, Hall Wilner and Amnon Wolman. \nVanessa Lindberg is a collector of sacred and secular song from Matanzas\, Cuba. She has studied in all of the major cabildos (temple houses) of Matanzas and strives to preserve and give new life to the deepest\, darkest afro-cuban roots. A Gloucester native\, she found her spiritual home on her first trip to Matanzas\, Cuba in 2003. Over many trips during the following decade\, she wandered through the streets and sat at the feet of the elders until she became fluent in Cuban Spanish and was invited to lead ceremonies in song as akpon. She has performed at Harvard University\, The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, Peabody Essex Museum\, The Rubin Museum\, Smith College and has taught workshops all over the US.
