SUMMARY:The Body is a House: The Story of Proprioception as We Float In Space
DESCRIPTION:Straight from Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center’s “Imaginary\nLandscapes” Exhibit and Conference\, Kate Tarlow Morgan comes home to MAGMA to share some moving ideas about what happens to the body when it occupies different spaces. \nThe Body is a House:\nThe Story of Proprioception as We Float In Space\nThis workshop draws on two foundational texts by poet\, educator\, and Black Mountain College rector Charles Olson: his unpublished essay “The Body is a House” (1955) and “Proprioception” (1961). Together\, these texts trace a proprioceptive quest: the body’s role in space and inside itself.\nKate will also source the physical experiments of Olson’s colleagues ~\n● Dancer: Katherine Litz’s explorations in the Kinesthetic Cube\n● Inventor: Buckminster Fuller’s Geodesic Dome\n● BMC Student\, Kenneth Snelson’s Tensegrity Integrity\nAnd introducing ~ The Extracellular Matrix \nEssentially\, one cannot be inside or outside of a place without a body.\nAll bodies welcome. \n$10-25 suggested BUY NOW \nKate Tarlow Morgan\, dancer\, author\, historian\, and Body-Mind Centering® teacher lives in Marlboro\, Vermont and sometimes\, in her hometown of NYC. Her daily movement practices navigate around her Attic\, at Movement Arts of Gloucester\, Ma. (MAGMA) and Brattleboro School of Dance. As sole archivist of The Rhythms Fundamentals —based on the study of human and animal movement—Kate is writing a 100- year history of the hotbed of somatic educators in New York City who participated in the radical reforms of the Progressive Era. For more than two decades\, Kate was editor-in-chief of Currents Journal for the Body-Mind Centering Association\, and editorial consultant for Lost & Found: CUNY Poetics Document Initiative. \n1 See blackmountaincollege.org. Throughout 1933–1957\, Black Mountain College (BMC) nurtured a collaborative community of artists\, writers\, dancers\, musicians\, potters\, weavers\, architects\, and furniture makers. Rooted in John Dewey’s learning by doing and decisively shaped by the Bauhaus refugees who arrived from Europe\, BMC was not only a site where distinctive subjects were taught\, but a laboratory where foundational questions about craft\, collaboration\, and integrated skills were actively and sometimes impetuously tested.

SUMMARY:Contra Dance
DESCRIPTION:Easy to Learn New England Style Contra\, Square & Circle Dances \nwith Caller Rose Sheehan and live music \n$15-25 sliding scale per person BUY NOW\, notaflof\, under 16 free \nTix will  also be available at the door. \nChildren & Families at Our Contra Dance – We love having children and families as part of our contra dance community! Nurturing young enthusiasm for live music\, movement\, and tradition is at the heart of what we do\, and kids are always welcome to join in the fun. \n\nParticipate in the dances: Children’s readiness to manage dance structure varies\, so we rely on parental judgement rather than fixed age limits.\nKeep the floor clear during sets: Because contra dancing involves fast-moving lines\, unexpected turns\, and backing up without looking\, active dancers cannot easily dodge someone darting across the room. Please ensure children refrain from running around the hall or playing between the lines while a dance is in progress to prevent trips and collisions.

SUMMARY:When the People Could Fly: a Trance Dance Somovement Journey
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Hadley Mays \nTrance Dance\, experiential anatomy and somatic movement for an integrated\nbody-mind and soul journey \nThis experience situates itself within a perspective\, that there is no separation between the physical and the spiritual dimensions: the human experience is a spiritual experience\, and the human body is both the material of and gateway to infinite dimensions of spirit and cosmos. We can navigate these dimensions through ecstatic and kinetic states of consciousness. Come fly with me: flight as dance\, as soul venture\, spirit journey and kinetic trance. Dive into a place where your vast interiority opens into the deep space of manifold intelligence. \nThe Practice begins with somatic movement to prepare our bodyminds for trance and the extended ranges of our somatic perceiving. Then we Trance Dance\, a blindfolded ritual dance process using breath\, movement\, and rhythm. Trance Dance is a co-creative call to action with the sacred spirit world; our intention sets a course\, our soul unfolds. \nCost: $25-40 sliding scale\, no one turned away for lack of funds – BUY NOW \nThe Facilitator \n\nHadley Mays is a certified practitioner of the Trance Dance ritual\, created by Wilbert Alix and Frank Natale from collected shamanic traditions and practices spanning over 40\,000 years. She has lived\, worked\, trained\, healed and played in altered states\, trance and the visionary realms throughout my life in many different countries\, cultures\, and contexts. \nBrief Bio\nHadley Mays is an interdisciplinary theater & movement artist\, teacher of contemporary performance\, and workshop facilitator\, and I am currently on faculty at Boston Conservatory. She holds an MFA in Theater and Contemporary Performance\, graduate studies in Psychology and Counseling\, and many years of experience and independent research in culture\, ritual\, and performance studies. \nOther details: Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in and something that you can use as a blindfold. SUMMARY:Hip Hop class series
DESCRIPTION:MAGMA is thrilled to welcome back guest teacher Miranda Lawson for a 6-week Hip Hop dance class series. Classes will dive into the foundations of Hip Hop with a focus on musicality\, rhythm\, and groove. Dancers will explore both choreography and freestyle\, honoring Hip Hop’s roots as an improvisational and expressive practice. Expect to sweat\, play\, and connect through movement and music. \nDrop-in $18 / 6-week series $90 \n2:00-2:45pm  Youth class\, ages 6+   SIGN UP \n3:00-4:00pm Teen/Adult class\, ages 14+   SIGN UP \nMiranda Lawson (she/her) is a Boston-based performer\, choreographer\, and educator whose work lives at the meeting point of contemporary and Hip Hop dance forms. She is fascinated by how these styles challenge and influence one another. A graduate of Mount Holyoke College with a BA in Dance and Psychology\, Miranda’s teaching is rooted in curiosity\, authenticity\, and community-building. Her classes emphasize exploration and connection\, inviting dancers to take risks\, celebrate their individuality\, and stay open to a little goofiness along the way. She currently performs with Urbanity Dance and Phunk Phenomenon\, while continuing to create and share her own choreographic work\, which has been presented at the School for Contemporary Dance and Thought\, the Multicultural Arts Center\, Tufts University\, and the American College Dance Association Conference. Miranda’s practice has been shaped by mentorship through MIDDAY Movement’s BIPOC Professional Dancer Mentorship program (2022–23)\, her Urbanity X residency (2022)\, and recognition from the Mass Cultural Council’s Pandemic Relief Grant and the Somerville Artists Fellowship (2023).
